Abandoning the powdered wigs popular in European courts at the time, he wears his own thinning grey hair shoulder-length. He is dressed simply yet elegantly in a collarless grey silk coat and matching waistcoat over a white ruffled cravat. This modest attire perfectly reflected his carefully crafted public persona as an unpretentious American philosopher.
