About the Artwork: Harmony (1985)

“Harmony”is a limited-edition mixed-media print created in 1985, produced in an edition of 300, and hand-signed and numbered by Hisashi Otsuka. This piece, #123 of 300, sits at the center of the edition.
This work showcases Otsuka’s signature fusion of Eastern tradition and contemporary style. It depicts Lady Mieko, the artist’s emblem of the modern Japanese woman, presented in a serene, balanced pose that symbolizes inner peace and cultural harmony.

The print is crafted with exceptional materials: gold leaf for luminous highlights, a mother-of-pearl spray coating for iridescence, and embossed silk-textured, 100% neutral-pH rag paper. It was produced by master printers at Black Box Collotype, using museum-quality double-thick stock to emulate the sheen and texture of Otsuka’s original silk paintings.

Art dimensions are approximately 21" × 27". Framed dimensions is 32" x 38". Many editions include a certificate of authenticity, underscoring the work’s collectible status.

Theme & Symbolism

The central theme of Harmony is the balance between the past and the present, or between East and West. Otsuka expresses this through mirrored profiles of Lady Mieko. The negative space between them forms the shape of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of love and mercy, symbolizing spiritual unity and compassion

Botanical elements—buds, blossoms, and natural motifs—represent new growth and renewal. The metallic gold detailing enhances these symbols, adding depth and a sense of reverence often associated with Japanese art.

Artistic Significance

Created during Otsuka’s post-Hawaii period, "Harmony" reflects his evolving mission to merge classical Japanese aesthetics with modern Western influences. Through Lady Mieko and the subtle presence of Kannon, the artwork conveys a message of cultural coexistence, balance, and inner peace. Considered one of Otsuka’s most meaningful works, Harmony continues to resonate with collectors for its refined craft, layered symbolism, and beautiful expression of unity across time and culture.

We will be adding detailed images of the masterful art in the near future.
