The Subject & Description. Martha is depicted in her later years with a calm, dignified expression. She wears traditional late-18th-century attire, featuring an elaborate white ruffled mob cap, a white neckerchief, and a dark dress draped with a black lace shawl. She is seated in a red-upholstered chair against a deliberately unfinished brown background. Renowned American artist Gilbert Stuart painted this oil portrait from life in 1796 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Created as a companion to his famous Athenaeum portrait of George Washington, Stuart kept the original painting unfinished so he could use it as a master reference to produce copies. Today, it remains one of her most definitive historical likenesses.
