Description
Hamilton is captured in a dignified pose with a serious expression projecting statesmanship. He wears traditional late-18th-century attire, featuring a dark coat and a white ruffled cravat.

Artist & Origin John Trumbull, the "Painter of the Revolution," created this iconic posthumous portrait in 1805, shortly after Hamilton's tragic death in a duel with Aaron Burr. Trumbull based the exact likeness on a marble bust sculpted by Giuseppe Ceracchi.

Historical Significance This masterpiece is universally recognized today as the direct source image for the engraving on the United States ten-dollar bill. The original 1805 painting currently resides in New York City Hall.
