This is the iconic 1796 oil painting of George Washington by American artist Gilbert Stuart.
George Washington, the first U.S. President, is depicted resigning from public life, standing as a civilian leader rather than a military commander. Washington wears a formal black velvet suit, his right hand extended in an oratorical gesture and his left holding a dress sword. The surrounding items are highly symbolic: books, a quill, and papers represent statecraft and the Constitution, while the chair's medallion features the American stars and stripes.
