His service began on the rugged front lines of the French and Indian War and culminated in his role as commander‑in‑chief of the Continental Army, where his leadership proved decisive in securing American independence. When the nation unanimously chose him as its first president in 1789, Washington set crucial precedents: he established the Supreme Court and the presidential cabinet, quelled the Whiskey Rebellion to uphold federal authority, and oversaw the defeat of the Western Lakes Confederacy in the Northwest Indian War—followed by efforts to negotiate peace. Though he remained immensely popular at the end of his second term, Washington refused to seek a third, insisting that the young republic must guard itself against hereditary rule and the rise of tyranny.

When American artist Gilbert Stuart began composing this portrait, he drew on the grand European tradition of state portraiture to underscore Washington’s authority and the dignity of the new nation. Subtle but deliberate references to the United States appear throughout the painting, and Washington’s poised stance is widely believed to echo his annual address to Congress in December 1795. Stuart’s image quickly became iconic: he produced several replicas, and engravings based on the portrait circulated widely, helping to cement Washington’s likeness—and legacy—in the American imagination.
