The scene instead depicts the five-man drafting committee presenting their draft of the Declaration to the Second Continental Congress on June 28, 1776. Standing at the center are John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert R. Livingston, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. They present the document to John Hancock, seated at the desk. The room is filled with 42 of the 56 eventual signers gathered in the Assembly Room of the Pennsylvania State House.
