Silk Wreaths and Silk Flowers and the Toxins Used to Create them.

Silk flowers made in China are not made from real silk. Instead, they are created from synthetic materials that imitate the appearance of real flowers. Due to concerns about toxins produced during manufacturing, Canvas Art Plus only offers paintings of wreaths created on canvas. These wreaths are more affordable than high-end silk alternatives, have a longer lifespan, and are eco-friendly.  Our canvas prints of these wreaths are created using natural latex inks and natural wood sourced from the USA.

Silk Floral Factory in China.

Following are the common materials used in producing these artificial silk flowers:

1. Polyester

The most common material used for making "silk" flowers today is polyester, a petroleum-based synthetic fabric. Polyester is lightweight, durable, and relatively inexpensive, which makes it ideal for mass production of flowers.

2. Polyethylene (PE) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

Some artificial flowers, especially stems and leaves, are made from PE or PVC, both plastic materials derived from petroleum. These plastics can be molded and dyed to resemble real stems, leaves, or even flower petals. PE is softer and more flexible, while PVC is more rigid.

3. Latex

Latex is used for some high-end artificial flowers because it can closely resemble the texture of real petals. Latex, derived from natural rubber trees or synthetically produced, provides a more lifelike feel.

4. Foam

Some flowers use foam materials, which are lightweight and flexible. They can be shaped into realistic petals and leaves.

5. Dyes and Chemicals

Synthetic dyes and chemical finishes are used to color and treat the artificial flowers. These chemicals allow for vibrant, lasting colors, but can also have environmental impacts due to the use of solvents and petroleum derivatives during production.

Concerns with Synthetic Materials:

  • Many of these materials are derived from petroleum, a non-renewable resource, and are not biodegradable.
  • The manufacturing process involves the use of chemicals, including dyes and solvents, which can contribute to environmental pollution if not managed properly.
  • Since most silk flowers are mass-produced in China, they are subject to factory-based chemical production, which raises concerns about environmental impacts and working conditions in production facilities.

In summary, "silk" flowers from China are typically made from synthetic materials like polyester, PE, PVC, latex, and foam, with added dyes and chemical treatments for color and texture. While these flowers offer affordability and durability, the use of petroleum-based products and chemicals poses environmental challenges.

Artist painting a wreath on canvas

All of Canvas Art Canvas Wreaths are created by American Artists using a variety of methods created with acrylic/latex paints and inks.  Once completed a super high resolution image is created and printed on cotton canvas blend using latex ink.
